Nestled in the heart of Chicago’s Lincoln Square neighborhood, Gene's Sausage Shop and Delicatessen is a remarkable European deli and gourmet grocery destination that warmly embraces tradition while offering a uniquely curated selection of authentic Old World flavors. This isn’t just another grocery store or deli — it’s a celebration of heritage through exceptional food and a welcoming community atmosphere.
What sets Gene’s apart is its extraordinary commitment to quality and authenticity. Whether you’re indulging in their perfectly grilled Sheboygan Bratwurst with pungent garlic notes or delighting in a sampler of their smoked sausages elegantly paired with house-made sauerkraut and rustic rolls, every bite bursts with rich, hearty character that boldly reflects European roots. Their assortment of handcrafted sausages—from classic all-beef skinless hot dogs to delicate turkey bratwurst—showcases expert butchery and deep culinary respect.
Beyond meats, Gene’s enchanting menu reveals divinely comforting dishes such as Wiener Schnitzel, the perfectly crisped exterior giving way to tender veal inside, or the tangy, satisfying Brat with Sauerkraut and Cabbage. For those with a sweeter palate, the house specialty desserts like Apple Strudel and Bienenstich are irresistible, offering flaky, buttery textures and luscious flavors that linger lovingly on the tongue. Pair these with an elegant touch—savor a glass of Sangria or sip refreshing cider and thoughtfully curated teas.
Noteworthy are the creative Shadow Of The Eclipse cocktails, which add a fun and sophisticated dimension to the experience. The Moonshine Mary, a moonshine-based Bloody Mary garnished with pickles and sausage, and the Pink Moon Lemonade, combining moonshine with sparkling San Pellegrino and fresh strawberry herbs, perfectly complement Gene’s hearty fare with a lively spirit and bold flavors.
Beyond the delicious eats, Gene’s offers a charming, intimate space that has evolved, including a rooftop restaurant and bar operating on weekends during warmer months. Here, visitors enjoy a convivial atmosphere under open skies, a perfect spot to share great food and drinks with friends, echoing the communal spirit captured within the shop. Many guests have raved about the genuine warmth and knowledge of the staff who offer authentic recommendations and attentive service that feels like being welcomed into a friend's home.
The array of European gourmet groceries is another compelling reason locals and visitors alike keep coming back. From premium imported cheeses and mustards to pickles and specialty pastas, the selection may be modest in size but rich in quality and uniqueness—perfect for adding a touch of Old World charm to any home-cooked meal.
While some have noted the limited store hours during special events, the overwhelming consensus celebrates Gene’s as a cherished neighborhood cornerstone. As one longtime customer beautifully puts it, “Gene’s is the kind of local shop that quietly becomes part of your routine and reminds you why places like this truly matter.” This sentiment speaks to a place where freshness meets tradition, and every visit feels like coming home.
For an authentic taste of European deli craftsmanship, paired with carefully sourced gourmet ingredients and a convivial, down-to-earth atmosphere, Gene's Sausage Shop and Delicatessen remains a singular destination in Chicago’s vibrant food scene. Whether you’re searching for a hearty bratwurst, decadent dessert, or a rare specialty ingredient to elevate your kitchen creations, Gene’s delivers unparalleled quality and care in every detail.

A true neighborhood classic. Fresh, beautifully prepared food, warm service, and a strong sense of tradition. From sausages to deli and European specialties, everything is done with care and consistency. Gene’s is the kind of local shop that quietly becomes part of your routine and reminds you why places like this truly matter.
Such a wonderful store with homemade sausages and foods along with a delightful assortment of premium imported foods and ingredients for that special meal or celebration at home. Theres also a rooftop restaurant and bar open during warmer months on the weekends that is cash only. The staff is very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. Highly recommend!
Discovered this place 2 months ago and we haven’t stopped coming. The staff is so nice and welcoming, the selection is small but good, and the rooftop is so great! Small european shop so we can’t fully do our weekly grocery run here but it has unique things we can’t get anywhere else. Meat and premade selection is amazing however. They opened their rooftop for beer and food this labor day and it has been amazing. Great views, cooked sausages, and just good times up there. Cash only in the rooftop kind of a bummer but they have an atm up there. I recommend this place to everyone!
You could make more money in the evening on the day of the festival. I came from a long way to Oktoberfest and the first thing I did was go to your store, and it was closed on Sunday at 4:00 PM. Do you work by the hour, not by the result? My store was open until the last customer. Thousands of people walk past your door, and you are closed.
This is a small Germany market. Clean and organiza. I bought sausage and cheese. The second floor has diversity products like beer, wine, pickles, pastas, and others. The sausage are delicious
Gene’s is amazing butcher shop with rooftop deck where you can enjoy eateries no freshly prepared sausage from the below store. Only annoying thing - roof restaurant is all cash.
What an amazing 2 floors of fantastic imported food and wine. There are so many lovely choices of German food including a phenomenal butcher shop and deli. There are imported chocolates, spices, honey, fresh produce, fruit juices. Everything you could want. But for us Germanophiles the Brat selection is amazing.
This is my first visit to this location of Gene's Sausage Shop and Deli. I grew up near Belmont & Central and remember the previous two locations. I was shopping with my Mom and we probably spent almost 45 minutes looking at all the products, wines, beers and fresh meat. The butcher was very friendly and knowledgeable. We bought a bunch of items. We even bought Potato & Onion Pierogi, which we cooked up for lunch. They were tasty, but not as good as Mom's. Great place for specialty groceries. I'll definitely be back especially for Polish Kielbasa.
